Bhubaneswar, May 14 - At least eight people have died due to sunstroke in the past two months across Orissa, officials said Monday.

While three deaths have been reported from the southern district of Ganjam, one death each has been reported from the districts of Balasore, Kandhamal, Kendrapada, Nuapada and Sundergarh, D.N. Sahu, an official of the state revenue control room, told IANS.

We received complaints of about 53 deaths due to sunstroke from various parts of the state. These are being investigated by the concerned district administrations, she said.

Officials have confirmed eight deaths due to sunstroke, but 21 deaths are due to other reasons. The causes behind the rest of the casualties are being probed, Sahu said.

The temperature recorded Saturday was over 40 degrees in the western towns of Sambalpur, Bolangir and Sundergarh. But it was below 40 degrees Sunday, a meteorological department official said here.

The coastal towns of Bhubaneswar, Puri and Balasore recorded 37, 30.4 and 35.7 degrees respectively Sunday, he added.

'We have not issued any heat wave warning in the state. Rain and thunder showers are likely to occur in some parts of Orissa by Tuesday, which will bring the temperature further down.
