Three Gujarat cops arrested for faking civilian killing
Apr 24, 2007 - 5:44:33 PM

Ahmedabad, April 24 - The Gujarat police Tuesday arrested three senior Indian Police Service - officers - two from the state and one from neighbouring Rajasthan - for killing an innocent Muslim in a fake shootout after claiming he was a terrorist.

D.G. Vanjhara headed the Anti-Terrorism Squad - and Rajkumar Pandyan was a superintendent of police -, while Dinesh Kumar was with the Rajasthan Special Task Force - when the 'encounter' or the shootout took place Nov 26, 2005, killing Sohrabuddin Sheikh on the outskirts of this city.

Sheikh was travelling from Hyderabad to Sangli in Maharashtra with his wife Kausarbi when the Gujarat ATS and the Rajasthan STF picked the couple along with an unidentified man from a bus.

Police had then claimed that Sheikh had links with fugitive mobster Dawood Ibrahim's aide Sharif Khan and Lashkar-e-Toiba. He was later killed while apparently trying to flee on motorcycle.

Sheikh's brother Rubabuddin last year approached the Supreme Court, saying police had no evidence against the deceased.

Following a directive of the apex court, the state government constituted a team to investigate the case and found that Sheikh was indeed innocent.

The state government admitted as much before the Supreme Court earlier this year and said strict action would be taken against the police officers responsible in the matter.
