Watch towers to battle Bharatpur fires

Jaipur, April 22 - Watchtowers and close circuit television will be installed at the famous Bharatpur bird sanctuary in Rajasthan to curb forest fires that have caused widespread destruction.
The Rajasthan government hopes to spend Rs.1 million to better protect the Keoladeo national park as the bird sanctuary at Bharatpur, over 170 km from the state capital, is officially known.
'The forest department has decided to erect 10 watchtowers and install close circuit TV in the park,' L.N. Dave, Rajasthan's forest minister, told IANS here. He said that steps were being taken to fight forest fires.
'The watchtowers would give a complete view of the park and they would also have provision for overhead water tanks, fire fighting equipment and trained staff to deal with any eventuality in case of fire,' he added.
The sanctuary is also facing an acute water shortage, mainly due to poor monsoon.
Spread over 28.73 sq km of land area, the Bharatpur sanctuary is a delight for bird watchers.
