Indian doctor in Britain arrested, bailed for manslaughter

[RxPG] London, Jan 11 - An Indian doctor working in Britain's National Health Service - was arrested and released on bail for allegedly causing the death of a 75-year-old patient.
Vijay Anand Harikrishnan, 27, was arrested on suspicion of the manslaughter of Vincent Morris who died in Sunderland Royal Hospital in September. Morris was left in a coma after suffering a stroke on April 16 last year.
But he made a remarkable recovery and after spending almost five months in hospital he was allowed to go home. Just hours before his release his condition mysteriously deteriorated - and he died a few hours later. His family called for an investigation, claiming the wrong catheter was fitted into his body. The police were called after a post-mortem examination and the doctor was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.
A Northumbria police spokesperson confirmed that Harikrishnan had been arrested and bailed on suspicion of manslaughter.
She added: 'We have been asked by the coroner for Sunderland to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in Sunderland Royal Hospital in September last year. The inquiry is still ongoing.'
A spokesperson for Sunderland Royal Hospital confirmed that Harikrishnan had been suspended from duty.
He said: 'As the case is the subject of ongoing legal proceedings it is impossible to comment further but we can confirm that the individual concerned has been suspended from duty.'
The doctors appeared at the Sunderland Magistrates' Court this week to apply for the return of his passport. He is scheduled to be married in India this month and magistrates agreed that he should be allowed to leave the county in order to attend his wedding.
