Patna junior doctors refuse to withdraw strike
Dec 26, 2006 - 2:58:39 AM

Patna, Dec 25 - Patients continued to suffer at the Patna Medical College and Hospital - Monday as junior doctors refused to withdraw their three-day-old strike demanding security, despite assurances from the Bihar government.

The doctors went on strike Saturday midnight following an alleged attack on some of them by attendants of a patient.

While Health Minister Chandra Mohan Rai gave an assurance to fulfil their demands, Vinod Kumar, one of the striking doctors, told reporters: 'We will not withdraw the strike until the government provides us security, particularly for those on night duty.'

The functioning of the government hospital remained paralysed Monday and patients, mostly poor, were badly hit. Officials said 10 patients had died since the strike began.

Not a single patient has been admitted to the hospital, including its emergency wards, since the strike began.

This is the third time in the last few months that junior doctors have struck work to press their demand for security after being allegedly attacked by patients' relatives.
