Agra doctor shot by assailants

Oct 26, 2008 - 10:02:10 AM
A series of attacks and abductions of doctors in the past two years has alarmed the medical fraternity.

[RxPG] Agra, Oct 26 - Three armed men, including the son of a retired magistrate, barged into the clinic of a doctor here and shot at him and his compounder, injuring them critically, police said Sunday.

Anil Rajan, a senior physician, was shot in the chest late Saturday night after the assailants forcibly entered his clinic in the upscale Lajpat Kunj colony in Civil Lines area. His compounder, who rushed to help the doctor, was also shot in the stomach.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police Prem Prakash, the three attackers have been identified as Sanjay, son of retired city magistrate Ranvir singh, Pradeep, a relative of former state minister Krishnavir Singh, and their aide Amit.

The doctor and his assistant have been admitted to Pushpanjali Hospital.

Police said they traced the car the attackers were travelling in and nabbed them at Mathura Road.

The trio have confessed to the crime and said they wanted to make some extra money for Diwali celebrations, said Deputy Inspector General N.K. Srivastav.

The city's medical fraternity held an emergency meeting Saturday night and decided to stay away from work as a mark of protest against the increasing attacks on doctors.

A series of attacks and abductions of doctors in the past two years has alarmed the medical fraternity.

'One reason why the doctors have become soft targets is that they appear to be doing financially well compared to other professionals and are always in touch with a variety of people who come for treatment,' said social activist Netra Pal Singh.
