Fish found in freezer of Kerala children's hospital

May 15, 2007 - 8:06:45 PM
'A memo has been served on the doctor,' the hospital superintendent said.

[RxPG] Kottayam, May 15 - Even as dust is yet to settle down on the death of around 30 newborns at a Thiruvananthapuram government hospital, five kg of fish have been found in a refrigerator meant to store medicines at a children's hospital here.

The discovery was made Tuesday at the Children's Hospital of the Medical College Hospital here when angry supporters of the youth wing of the Communist Party of India - demanded that the hospital superintendent make an inspection of the surgery department of the children's hospital.

When the superintendent opened the refrigerator kept there he found a plastic bag in the freezer compartment. The refrigerator is used to store medicines for use in the children's ward.

The angry CPI members grabbed the plastic bag, and on opening it found five kg of a popular variety of river fish.

According to reports, a doctor, Mathen George, had kept the fish Monday as he was unable to take it home. He allegedly received the fish packet from a patient.

The matter was reported to the principal of the Medical College.

'A memo has been served on the doctor,' the hospital superintendent said.

Meanwhile, State Health Minister P.K. Sreemathi, under fire for the infant deaths due to infection contracted in the labour room, is awaiting a report on the matter.
