Hoteliers to file case against government on anti smoking rule

According to the new rule that would come into effect Oct 2, hotels with less than 30 rooms and restaurants with a seating capacity below 30 should not permit their guests to smoke. Bigger hotels and restaurants can have a sealed smoking lounge.

Chennai, Sep 20 - The Indian hotel industry will file a case against the government against its anti smoking rule that is to be implemented from Oct 2, a hotel industry representative said here Saturday.
'The Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India -, the apex body of all hotel associations, will file a case against the government's anti smoking rule,' T. Natarajan, honorary secretary, The South India Hotels & Restaurants Association - told reporters.
While welcoming the government's move he said too little time was given to the hoteliers to construct a smoking room with prescribed ventilation facilities.
Under the new rule, hotels, restaurants, discos, pubs, and bars are classified as public places and smoking is not allowed in these places.

Natarajan said the case is expected to be filed in couple of days by FHRAI.
