Naresh Trehan quits Escorts hospital

May 18, 2007 - 9:34:50 PM
It would be a multi-disciplinary institution with training institutes, an R&D centre and with both alternative and modern medicines of treatment.

[RxPG] New Delhi, May 18 - Renowned cardiologist Naresh Trehan Friday resigned from the post of executive director of Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre Limited after nearly 20 years, a hospital statement said.

Trehan, a pioneer of medical tourism in India, had helped to shape the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Center Limited - into a premier institute.

He is now focussing on the Rs.10 billion Medicity coming up at Gurgaon, in which he is reported to have a personal stake. The healthcare hub, coming up along the lines of Dubai Health City, is expected to be the largest healthcare hub in South Asia.

'Dr Trehan has been associated with Escorts for over 20 years from the inception of the idea to its execution and over the years bringing it to the level of being the premier cardiac hospital in the country,' said S.M. Singh, managing director, Escorts and Fortis Healthcare Limited.

In a veiled criticism that Trehan was not giving enough attention to Escorts, Singh said over the past 18 months the top doctor has been increasingly focused on the ambitious and challenging Medicity.

It would be a multi-disciplinary institution with training institutes, an R&D centre and with both alternative and modern medicines of treatment.

However, Trehan continues to be a 10 percent shareholder in Escorts, which was acquired by Ranbaxy-promoted Fortis Healthcare Limited in September 2005.
