Orissa doctors dismissed for cutting palms of tribes

Bhubaneswar, Oct 24 - Orissa Friday dismissed three doctors from their jobs for allegedly cutting off palms of five tribes during autopsy.
The tribes were killed during a police firing in the coastal district of Jajpur three years ago.
'The state government has dismissed them from government jobs following the order of state chief minister Naveen Patnaik Thursday,' a senior official of the state health department told IANS.
He said of the 500 tribes protesting the construction undertaken by Tata Steel, at least 13 were killed during police firing Jan 2, 2006 at the industrial complex in Kalinga Nagar, some 100 km from Bhubaneswar.
Bibek Swain, an anaesthelogist, Santanu Sahu, a surgery specialist and Anup Nath Sharma, an orthopedic specialist had chopped the palms from five of the bodies saying they had done so to preserve the identity of those killed.
The incident had created a storm in and outside Orissa. Following pressure from various human right groups, the state government had suspended three doctors in the same year.
A leader of Orissa Medical Service Association, that earlier opposed the suspensions of the doctors, however Friday expressed that the fresh move will demoralise the government doctors to perform post-mortems.
