Expert Group to Draw Charter of Scientific Research in India

The Ministry of Human Resource Development, India has constituted a Committee of Experts for the purpose of writing the Charter of National Institutes for Scientific Research and Education.

The Members of the Committee are: Dr. S. Sivaram, Director, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune; Dr. P. Balaram, Chairman, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; Dr. Sanjay G. Dhande, Director, IIT, Kanpur; and Shri Sudeep Banerjee, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development. Dr. S. Dattagupta, Director of Dr. S.N.Bose Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata will be the convenor.

It may be recalled that the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (SAC-PM), in its first meeting held on March 4, 2005 under the chairmanship of Prof. C.N.R. Rao had recommended the creation of two new institutes devoted to Science Education and Research. To be named National Institutes for Scientific Research and Education (NISRE), these are likely to be located at Pune and Kolkata. The financial requirements of these institutions have been estimated at Rs. 500 crores for each institution over a period of five years.
