Five swine flu cases in Delhi

According to Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia, apart from the quarantine unit at the International airport, RML and Lok Nayak Jai Prakash - hospitals, ten other hospitals have been fully geared to take the patient load.

 
[RxPG] New Delhi, June 11 - One more swine flu case was reported in the capital, taking the total number of cases to five, health officials said here Thursday.

'A total of five swine flu cases have been reported in Delhi. We are awaiting reports of two more,' Shashi Khare, head of the virology department in the National Institute of Communicable Diseases -, told IANS.

She said a 41-year-old woman who had come to Delhi from Haiti via New York on June 5 tested positive for influenza A-.

The women, a resident of Delhi, has been quarantined and kept in the isolation ward at Ram Manohar Lohia - hospital, which is one of the 13 hospitals where flu patients are being admitted.

According to N.K Chaturvedi, the medical superintendent of Ram Manohar Lohia hospital: 'The woman was admitted to the hospital on June 6 after she reported flu like symptoms. She has been tested positive for the flu.'

He said on Wednesday a 17-year-old student from Boston tested positive and has been kept in the hospital. His 61-year-old father has been quarantined at the hospital after he reported flu like symptoms.

Apart from the woman and the 17-year-old boy, the others who have tested positive include a 25-year-old woman, who had come from New York. She has been quarantined at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash hospital.

Earlier, a 35-year-old man who reached Delhi from New York June 2 had tested positive. The man went straight home from the airport and transmitted the virus to his mother. The two, who were earlier home quarantined, were shifted to the RML hospital Wednesday, said Chaturvedi.

He said a 47-year-old French national, who arrived in India last week and came to Delhi after visiting Hyderabad, has also been in the hospital for the past two days. 'He was admitted with flu like symptoms. We are awaiting his report,' he said.

Before coming to India, the French national had visited Japan, Singapore and Malaysia.

As more cases of swine flu are being reported in the national capital, authorities have set up 10 multi-disciplinary teams to probe and confirm the outbreak of swine flu.

According to Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia, apart from the quarantine unit at the International airport, RML and Lok Nayak Jai Prakash - hospitals, ten other hospitals have been fully geared to take the patient load.

The other Delhi hospitals include - Guru Tegh Bahadur -, Hindu Rao Hospital, Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital, Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital and Safdarjang Hospital.
