Flash mob in Delhi in support of child nutrition
Jun 6, 2013 - 7:15:34 PM

New Delhi, June 6 - Hundreds of children will participate in a flash mob to observe the global day of action in support of child health and nutrition in the capital Friday, organisers said.

Several children's organisations, including Save the Children, World Vision and Children's Campaign-NINE IS MINE, which are leading the global campaign in India, will participate in the event.

The children will gather at Central Park in Connaught Place at 5 p.m. to participate in the flash mob, which will begin with a flash mob dance with children breaking out in a dance sequence to attract public attention, organisers said.

It'll be followed by a flash freeze, in which children will remain motionless for a few moments flashing fruits and placards to highlight the situation of malnutrition. The flash noise will come next in which participants will bang plates and spoons to symbolize unavailability of food.

In India, we lose 16.5 lakh children before they even reach their 5th birthday, which is the highest anywhere in the world. Malnutrition is the single largest killer accounting for one-third of under-five deaths in our country, an organiser said.

Music bands Bandish and Parikrama will be performing at the venue.

Similar events have been planned in London, France, Canada, Indonesia, Uganda and South Africa on the eve of the Hunger Summit to be held on June 8 in London where the G8 - countries will gather to tackle the issue of global hunger.

The G8 countries are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain, the US and Russia. The European Union - is represented within the G8 but cannot host or chair its summits.
