India's swine flu death rises to 359

New Delhi, Oct 6 - Eight swine flu deaths, including four in Maharashtra, were reported Tuesday, taking India's toll to 359, health authorities said here.

Also, 185 people were affected with the flu, taking the total number of people infected with the contagious virus to 11,253.

During the day, four deaths were reported - two in Maharashtra and one each in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat - but later four more deaths were found to be due to the virus.

Officials said two deaths in Maharashtra and one death each in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka were reported earlier but the lab reports confirmed only Tuesday that they were due to swine flu.

With the four deaths in Maharashtra, the toll in the country's worst-affected state has gone up to 147.

One death in Karnataka has taken the state's toll to 101. Most deaths in the state were reported from Bangalore.

Two deaths in Andhra Pradesh have taken the toll in the state to 38, while in Gujarat it has gone up to 36.

'Till date, samples from 47,145 people have been tested for influenza A - in government laboratories and a few private laboratories across the country and 11,253 of them have been found positive,' a statement issued here said.

Of the 185 new cases, 34 were from Maharashtra, taking the total number of people there affected with the virus to 3,106 - the highest in the country.

Delhi reported 31 fresh cases, taking the number of people who have tested positive to 2,868 - the second highest in the country.

The other cases were reported from Tamil Nadu -, Kerala -, Andhra Pradesh -, Haryana -, Gujarat - and Jammu and Kashmir -.
