No sign of swine flu in India: officials

New Delhi, May 10 - India continues to be free of the swine flu virus and authorities have so far screened 340,000 people coming to the country from the flu affected countries.

'As of now, no case has been reported in India. The situation is being monitored,' an official statement said Sunday.

'Till date, about 3.4 lakh passengers have been screened,' it said.

Health authorities said about 180 doctors and 102 paramedics have been deployed to man 72 counters at 21 airports in India.

'We have tested samples of 36 persons and it has been found negative for influenza H1N1. Samples of two persons are under examination,' it said.

Screening of passengers coming from affected countries is on at international airports in Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bangalore, Calicut, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Delhi, Varanasi, Goa, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mangalore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Srinagar, Trichy and Thiruvananthapuram.

According to the World Health Organisation -, 29 countries had officially reported 4,379 cases influenza A - infection till Friday.

Mexico has reported 1,626 laboratory confirmed cases of human infection, including 45 deaths. The US has reported 2,254 cases, including two deaths. Canada has reported 280 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death, Costa Rica has reported eight laboratory confirmed cases and one death.
