Men twice as likely to die in middle age

Men are twice as likely to die between the ages of 30 and 65 as women, according to a German study.

The study by the Institute for Public Health and Nursing Research at the University of Bremen in Germany said the reasons for men's higher mortality included their greater readiness to take health risks and their more dangerous working conditions.

A third of the men in that age group, and a sixth of women, drink too much alcohol, the study found. Half of the women, and a fifth of the men, have medical check-ups to detect early-stage cancer.

Women suffer from psychological disorders and pain more frequently, while men are injured more often, said the study commissioned by Berlin's Robert Koch Institute.
