An agreement with a representative body of doctors of Indian origin in the US will help promote primary health care in selected states of India, the Rajya Sabha was informed Thursday.
The agreement with the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) - which claims membership of 41,235 physicians and over 12,000 medical students of Indian Origin in the US - was signed Jan 7.
"The knowledge, skills and resources of AAPI will be harnessed to help improve primary healthcare in India starting with pilot projects in two or more states," Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi said.
"Funds will be provided by the Government of India, state governments concerned and AAPI," he said in a written reply to a question from Rajya Sabha member and actress-dancer Hema Malini.
