South Asian Health Ministers Discuss R and D In Traditional Medicine

Health Ministers� from the countries of the South-Asian region today began a Conference in Seoul to discuss Research and Development strategies concerning traditional systems of medicine. India is a pioneer in the traditional medicine system like Ayurvedic, Unani and Siddha and many countries in the region including China, South Korea and Thailand etc. also have age-old systems of traditional medicine. The Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr.Anbumani Ramadoss is taking part in the Conference representing India.

India is keen on interacting with South Korea and other countries of the region for research in traditional medicines as well as strategies for their quality control and regulation.

Dr.Ramadoss met the South Korean Minister for Health and Welfare Mr.Kim Geun Tae separately and discussed with him Indian experience in quality control and regulation of Ayurvedic medicines, besides exchanging information on manufacturing technology of Ayurvedic and Unani medicines. He also wanted to know the South Korean experience in sensitization of traditional system in allopathic medical education.

Collaboration in Health research and basic medical sciences including Stem Cell research also came up for discussions during the meeting. The two Ministers reportedly discussed surveillance especially for the new and emerging infections like pandemic influenza, SARS and in particular bird-flu, which is creating a scare in various parts of the world.
