The Delhi government Sunday hiked the grant for sanitation facilities by a little over 31 percent to provide better amenities to the citizens.

The new plan hikes the amount of aid for sanitation facilities from Rs.760 million to Rs.1 billion, a rise of Rs.240 million.

The aid would be given to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to develop better amenities in 488 unauthorised colonies, officials said.

Senior officials emphasised the need to provide a clean environment for the residents of all unauthorised colonies as a large number of people from the weaker sections of the society resided there.

They added that the annual development grant for each colony was also raised from Rs.2 million to Rs.2.5 million.

The government has developed a time-bound action plan to develop infrastructure facilities required to host international games like the 19th Commonwealth Games in 2010, officials said.
