Jharkhand chemists Monday called off a strike to protest anomalies in the value added tax (VAT) implemented from April 1 after Finance Minister Raghubar Das promised an ordinance to accept their demands.

"We have called off the strike as the finance minister has accepted our demand and assured to bring an ordinance to ensure VAT implementation on only the maximum retail price (MRP)," said Amar Kumar Sinha, secretary of the Jharkhand Druggist and Chemist Association here.

All medicine shops in Jharkhand will be opened from Tuesday, Sinha added.

The state's chemists had gone on strike from midnight Sunday to protest against the multiple tax system in VAT on medicines.
