Jimmy Carter to discuss polls with Nepal PM

Kathmandu, May 18 - Former US President Jimmy Carter will arrive here next month on a three-day visit to discuss the much-awaited election with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and the assistance he and his Carter Center can offer to facilitate the ongoing peace process.
Darren Nance, field office director at Carter Center that has established an office in Kathmandu at the invitation of the Nepal government to observe the constituent assembly election, met Koirala Friday to inform him about the former US president's trip.
Carter, accompanied by his wife Eleanor Rosalynn Carter, will be in Nepal from June 13-16, during which he will also meet officials of the Election Commission, leaders of the political parties, members of civil society and non-governmental organisations.
Carter had visited Nepal in 1985 for vacation.
The former US president was to have visited Nepal last May but the visit was postponed in view of the upheavals in the country following the fall of King Gyanendra's 15-month regime and the installation of a seven-party government.
It was not known whether Carter would also meet Maoist leaders, who regard the US as their biggest enemy and have been asking for the US ambassador to Nepal James Francis Moriarty to leave if he 'can't keep his mouth shut'.
Recently, Washington updated its list of terrorist organisations banned in the US.
The Maoists are still on it though they signed a peace pact and formally joined Nepal government last month.
Two more organisations from Nepal have been included in the list. They are two factions of former Maoists, the Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha led by former senior Maoist leader Jay Krishna Goit, which is becoming increasingly active in the Terai plains, and its other splinter led by Jwala Singh.
