12 killed in Pakistan bombing, minister critically injured

[RxPG] Islamabad, April 28 - Pakistan's Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao was believed to be critically injured in a bomb blast, possibly a suicide attack, at a rally in northwest Pakistan Saturday in which 12 people were killed and several injured.

The powerful explosion took place at a public rally of Sherpao at his constituency, Charsada, in the North West Frontier Province -.

The bomb exploded as soon as the public gathering was announced over at sunset, news agencies and television channels said.

Sherpao, 63, who heads the Pakistan People's Party -, is a key figure in the efforts to fight terrorism and religious extremism, particularly in the NWFP and Balochistan.

At least 12 people were killed and several injured, including the minister, police said.

Initial reports quoting District's police chief Feroz Shah said the bomb blast was a suicide attack. He said the toll might climb higher.

Sherpao's son Sikandar, who was also attending the meeting, was believed to be injured, police said.
