Ex-PCB chief objects to cup probe panel make-up

Lahore, April 12 - Immediate past Pakistan Cricket Board - president Shaharyar Khan said Thursday that he wants Salim Altaf, who was a director under him, to also answer questions on the team's World Cup debacle rather than asking them.
Altaf, who is in the three-man probe panel and now holds a different designation in the PCB, was the director of cricket operations when the team crashed out in the first round of the ongoing World Cup in the West Indies recently.
After sending his written observations on Pakistan's cup debacle to the panel, Khan said he has had 'reservations of principle' in Altaf being a part of the probe committee.
'I do have reservations of principle and not of personality on the composition of the probe committee due to the presence on it of the former director - cricket operations,' Khan said in a statement released by the PCB.
'The role of PCB is crucial in addressing this issue and rather than posing the questions, the director should have been answering them like the captain, manager, players and coaches. I feel the composition of the committee would lead to a lack of objectivity and credibility in the reports assessment of PCB cricket operations' important role,' he said reacting to some adverse reports in the local media.
Altaf was sent to another department during internal transfers effected by Khan's successor Nasim Ashraf after the World Cup upheaval.
Khan said he had written these facts in the document that he had sent to probe panel chairman Ejaz Butt. Salahuddin Ahmad is the third panel member. All three are former Test players.
'There is no question of my not wishing to cooperate with the committee. I had been requested to appear before the committee on Wednesday, April 11,' he said.
'I informed the PCB and chairman Ejaz Butt that I lecture at LUMS - on Wednesdays and, therefore, was not available on that day.'
Inzamam-ul-Haq's side lost two of the three matches, including the one to minnows Ireland, to crash out in the first round.
