Pakistan sets up body to promote nuclear non-proliferation

Islamabad, April 30 - Pakistan has set up a body in its foreign ministry to promote the objective of nuclear non-proliferation, foreign office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said Monday.

The Strategic Export Control Division - will formulate and enforce laws, rules and regulations for implementation of export controls in accordance with Pakistan's Export Control Act and also serve as a licensing body, Aslam said at the weekly briefing.

She said that the establishment of the SECDIV was a continuing manifestation of Pakistan's strong commitment to non-proliferation and its determination to fulfil its national and international export control commitments.

Pakistan has already notified a control list of goods, technologies, materials and equipment that incorporate the internationally accepted standard lists of the Nuclear Suppliers Group and the Missile Technology Control Regime.

Export of items on the control list from Pakistan will only be possible after approval by the SECDIV, she said.

Aslam said that the division would be manned by representatives of all concerned ministries, organizations responsible for implementation and enforcement of export controls including the foreign ministry, the strategic plans division, the commerce ministry, the central board revenues and others as required.
