Apr 17, 2007 - 11:26:03 PM

New Delhi, April 17 - The Bharatiya Janata Party - Tuesday nominated its three-time counsellor Aarti Mehra to the post of Delhi's new mayor.

With the BJP taking 164 of 272 civic body seats, Mehra, who filed her nomination for the post Tuesday, is sure to be elected to the office.

'While Mehra has been selected for the post of mayor, Jeet Singh Bajwa would be her deputy,' said Delhi BJP chief Harsh Vardhan.

Mehra, 45, was born in Punjab and did her graduation from Miranda House, Delhi University. The counsellor says horse riding is her favourite hobby. She has also done a special course in marketing from New York.

Mehra has been as active member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad - since she was 18 and has successfully held many prestigious posts including that of vice-president of Delhi University's Student Union.

She was first elected to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi - in 1997 from ward 14 -. She was re-elected in 2002 despite the otherwise pathetic show by the BJP. This time she won from Hauz Khas, in south Delhi.

While the BJP has selected Subhas Arya to head its counsellors in the new MCD house, senior leader Vijendra Gupta would be the chairman of the high power standing committee.

The new MCD will see its first day of business on April 23, when the election, if required, for these posts will be held. All the 272 counsellors will also take oath the same day.

The MCD elections were held April 5 and the results were declared April 7.
