[RxPG] New Delhi, May 16 - Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Wednesday clarified that he did not want to become the president of India.
'The newspapers have carried reports today about some suggestions that I should stand as a candidate for the post of president of India. I want to state categorically that I have no desire to occupy that office,' the veteran Bharatiya Janata Party - leader said in a statement issued late Wednesday.
Vajpayee was referring to media reports that the Trinamool Congress had suggested he could be the nominee of the National Democratic Alliance - for the top post.
At an NDA meeting, held at Vajpayee's residence Tuesday evening, to decide the coalition's stance on the issue, Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee and her party colleague Dinesh Trivedi had made the suggestion that was immediately shot down by the octogenarian BJP leader.
The meeting had also authorised him to decide on the NDA candidate.
'The NDA will announce its choice for the post of president of India shortly,' Vajpayee said in his statement.
President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's term ends in late July.
