Jharkhand minister threatens to dislodge Koda government

Ranchi, April 14 - The seven-month-old Madhu Koda government in Jharkhand came under threat Saturday after one of his ministers warned that he would dislodge the United Progressive Alliance - government if the chief minister did not listen to his demands.

Issuing a threat to the government, Harinarayan Rai, urban development minister and one of the three independents who had dislodged the former Arjun Munda government, said at least four ministers were unhappy with the chief minister.

'Four ministers are unhappy with Chief Minister Madhu Koda. Koda is not taking interest in the complaints of the ministers. The developmental work in our constituencies are not taken up on priority by the government,' Rai told reporters here.

According to Rai, Water Resources Minister, Kamlesh Singh, Rural Development minister Enos Ekka - the other two who played a crucial role in the fall of the previous government - and Science and Technology Minister Chandra Prakash Chaudhary were also unhappy with Koda's style of functioning.

According to sources, the independent ministers want the chief minister's post to be rotated among them, a demand the ruling Congress party has not agreed to.

The Koda government enjoys a razor thin majority in the state assembly. In the 82-member assembly, his government enjoys support of 42 legislators - an exact simple majority.

Koda, who was in the national capital earlier this week, has reportedly informed UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi about the new unrest in his coalition.

Meanwhile, Singh, Ekka and Finance Minister Stephen Marandi are also scheduled to go to New Delhi.

The trio - Singh, Ekka and Rai - had helped Koda to pull down the Munda-led National Democratic Alliance government in September last year and had become ministers in the new government.
