May 10, 2007 - 12:57:20 PM

New Delhi, May 10 - The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day Thursday over Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's remarks about the number of people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar migrating to the capital.

MPs from the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Samajwadi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party - were up on their feet as soon as the house observed a one-minute silence to pay tribute to freedom fighters on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the first war of independence.

There was chaos as all the members were shouting and BJP MPs asked for Dikshit's resignation.

Unable to control the situation, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee first adjourned the house till 12 noon and then for the day.

Dikshit had been quoted as saying Wednesday: 'Every year, thousands of people come from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and other states, and more power, water, roads etc are needed for them.'

She apologised later for making the 'inadvertent' remark.
