[RxPG] Lucknow, April 20 - The fourth phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls on Monday will see a high number of contestants with criminal antecedents as well as a large percentage of multi-millionaires in the fray.

As many as 735 candidates, of the 812 in the fray, do not have a PAN - number.

According to a study by Election Watch, an NGO that has been keeping track of the criminal and financial background of poll contestants, 'criminal cases were pending against as many as 118'.

Elections will be held for 57 seats in the fourth phase of the seven-phased elections.

'This phase will be unique as it will feature at least four contestants from each of the 57 constituencies who are facing criminal cases in courts,' disclosed retired director general of police I.C. Dwivedi, the driving force behind Election Watch.

He urged for the need to issue a 'red alert' in each of these areas.

Significantly, the ruling Samajwadi Party - tops the list with 27 such candidates.

The Bharatiya Janata Party - has 52 candidates with 16 facing criminal cases, followed by the Bahujan Samaj Party - with 12 such contestants and Rashtriya Lok Dal - with six. There are more candidates with criminal cases from the smaller political outfits and independents.

The charges include, attempt to murder, culpable homicide, extortion, assault, criminal intimidation, wrongful confinement and kidnapping.

The polls will also see 45 multi-millionaires in the fray. The Congress' Ajay Pratap Singh from Colonelganj constituency is clearly the most affluent with declared assets worth Rs.318 million.

He is followed by Samar Singh of the All India Forward Bloc -, Mohammad Tabis Khan -, Daya Shankar -, Sangram Singh -, Jai Pratap Singh -, Arun Veer Singh -, Radhey Shyam -, Ravindra Pratap - and Anil Singh -.

Interestingly, the fourth phase will also see 14 nominees who claim to possess no assets at all.
