Naidu seeks Maharashtra government's dismissal over Babli dam
Mar 31, 2007 - 5:04:03 PM

New Delhi, March 31 - Telugu Desam Party - chief N. Chandrababu Naidu Saturday sought the dismissal of the Maharashtra government if work on a proposed dam on the Godavari river was not immediately halted.

Naidu made the demand ahead of a meeting scheduled between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and an all-party delegation led by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Reddy, accompanied by Congress leaders, came to Delhi Saturday.

While the all-party team is also expected to seek the central government's intervention to restrain Maharashtra from proceeding further on the project, Naidu went a step ahead and said New Delhi should sack the Congress-led Maharashtra government under Article 356 of the constitution if it went ahead with the construction of the Babli dam.

Speaking to reporters, Naidu said: 'The dam will cause tremendous water shortage in several backward areas in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh including Adilabad, Nalgonda, Karimnagar and Khammam.'

The land being used by the Maharashtra government to construct the dam falls in the catchment area which is also claimed by Andhra Pradesh.

Naidu added that as both Maharashtra and central governments were led by the Congress, it was now incumbent upon Congress president Sonia Gandhi to intervene and safeguard the interests of the people of Telangana.
