Nation remembers Rajiv Gandhi with tributes, marches

New Delhi, May 21 - Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, accompanied by several leaders, paid tributes to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 16th death anniversary Monday at his memorial here.

Amid hymns, Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Vadra offered floral tributes at Vir Bhumi, the memorial of the assassinated leader.

Senior Congress leaders including cabinet ministers and MPs along with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also joined them at an all-religious prayer organised for the occasion.

Congress leaders across the country took out marches and rallies to remember the former prime minister, who was assassinated by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam - in 1991 during an election campaign in Tamil Nadu's Sriperumbudur.

Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala administered an anti-terrorism pledge on the occasion at a state government-organised function, while Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi laid flowers on a portrait of late Gandhi.

A group of Congressmen from Karnataka and Pudussery organised a Gandhi Jyoti procession during which they travelled through parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu apart from their states. The procession culminated at Sriperumbudur Monday.
