Protests against Koli over human trafficking links
Apr 24, 2007 - 4:39:17 PM

Jaipur, April 24 - The Rajasthan unit of the Congress is demanding stern action against Ramswaroop Koli, Bharatiya Janata Party - MP from Bayana, for his alleged involvement in human trafficking.

The opposition Congress along with members of human rights vigilance committee staged a protest against the MP at Bayana, over 170 km from here.

Block Congress workers also staged sits-in on the Bharatpur-Dholpur route and took out a massive rally against Koli.

B.D. Kalla, state president of the Congress, told IANS: 'We are for an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation on all the foreign trips undertaken by Koli. The allegation of human trafficking is a serious matter and should be investigated appropriately and stern action taken against all those guilty.'

Koli has, however, denied the allegations terming them a political conspiracy.

Koli was named by an accomplice of suspended BJP MP Babubhai Katara, who is accused of smuggling people abroad on the diplomatic passports of his family, as one of the central figures in the human trafficking racket.

Koli has been in midst of controversy earlier too. He was one of the lawmakers in a 2005 TV channel sting operation in which MPs were shown asking for cuts for sanctioning funds under the MP Local Area Development Scheme -.

BJP functionaries in Rajasthan are not ready to speak on the issue.

Four years ago, the CBI had booked another BJP leader, Gangaram Koli, former MP from Bayana, for helping nine people emigrate to the Netherlands illegally.

He wasn't a member of parliament at the time of the alleged crime. The investigation against Gangaram Koli is still going on.
