Punjab legislature, judiciary face-off over house

Chandigarh, April 24 - The allotment of a government bungalow simultaneously to the deputy speaker of the Punjab assembly and to a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has resulted in a row between the lawmakers and judiciary.
Punjab Deputy Speaker Satpal Gosain, a Bharatiya Janata Party legislator, Tuesday shot off letters to the assembly speaker, Punjab governor and Chandigarh administrator, seeking action under the breach of privilege clause of the assembly.
He claimed he had been allotted a house in Chandigarh's upscale Sector 2 by the Punjab government on April 14 and had taken possession of it. He maintained that he was staying in the house and renovation work was going on.
Gosain said that when he returned Tuesday, he found that 'locks had been put on the doors and a notice pasted on the house saying it had been given to the high court pool for allotment to a judge'.
'I have sought action in the matter. The privilege of a sitting legislator has been violated,' Gosain told reporters.
Chandigarh administration officials said the bungalow was one of the five properties withdrawn from the Punjab pool and given to the high court pool.
They said the Punjab government had mistakenly allotted it to Gosain.
The matter is likely to be taken up by the Punjab government with the Chandigarh administration.
