RJD wins Jharkhand's Palamau Lok Sabha seat
Apr 2, 2007 - 5:42:31 PM

Ranchi, April 2 - The ruling United Progressive Alliance - in Jharkhand Monday won the Palamau Lok Sabha seat with its Rashtriya Janata Dal - candidate defeating his Bahujan Samaj Party - rival by a comfortable margin.

Ghuran Ram of the RJD, a joint candidate of the Congress, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha - and other parties under the UPA, defeated his BSP rival Kameshwar Baitha by 22,327 votes.

Jawahar Paswan, the Bharatiya Janata Party - candidate of the National Democratic Alliance -, came a poor third in the by poll held on March 29. The votes were counted Monday.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda expressed happiness over the win and said the result proved the people's support for the UPA government.

The Palamau seat had fallen vacant after the Lok Sabha expelled 11 MPs on charges of accepting cash for asking questions in the House. Manoj Bhuiya of RJD had won the seat in the 2004 Lok Sabha election but was expelled in the scam.

The BJP had toiled hard to have a Lok Sabha MP from Jharkhand by winning the Palamau by-election but it fell flat since its key ally Janata Dal-United - did not back the party and abstained from campaigning.

The BJP, however, alleged that the seat went to RJD owing to electoral malpractices.

There was re-polling in four booths on April 1 following reports of irregularities during polling, including cases of improper sealing of electronic voting machines - in 26 booths of Garwah.
