New Delhi, April 24 - Indian communist leader Sitaram Yechury, who played a crucial role in bringing Maoists into Nepal's political mainstream, was in Kathmandu Tuesday to attend the Himalayan country's Democracy Day celebrations.

'Yechury has been invited by the prime minister of Nepal to participate in the celebrations as chief guest,' said a release from the Communist Party of India-Marxist - office here.

Nepal is celebrating the first anniversary of the uprising that brought down the absolute rule of King Gyanendra one year ago.

Yechury, who left for Kathmandu Tuesday morning, is the first Indian politician to visit Nepal after the interim government took over the reins of that country.

Yechury, whose involvement reportedly facilitated the 12-point agreement between the Nepalese political parties and the Maoists, will hold discussions with an array of leaders including Madhav Kumar Nepal, general secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal -, and Maoist chief Prachanda.

After its restoration, Nepal's parliament had passed a resolution acclaiming Yechury's contribution to the restoration of democracy in Nepal.
