Raghunath finishes 9th in shooting World Cup

New Delhi, April 3 - India's P.T. Raghunath has finished ninth in the men's 10-metre air rifle event in the World Cup at Fort Benning in the US.

Raghunath shot a total of 595 - Monday and narrowly missed the finals, where eight top shooters qualify to vie for the top honours. This was the Indian's best performance in the World Cup.

Chinese Zhu Qinan won the gold with a score of 702.5 while the silver went to Matthew Emmons of the US with a score of 699.6. Liu Tianyou of China bagged the bronze with a score of 699.8.

Gagan Narang of India disappointed as he finished 27th with a score of 592 -, a below par score by his own standards.

Narang, focussing lately more on the 50m three position rifle events in the World Cups, was not satisfied by his performance in the 10m air rifle event.

'I stretched a muscle in my right knee while I was doing physical fitness training three days before the start of the World Cup. So I could not lock my right knee at all while shooting and was in too much pain,' he said.

Sanjeev Rajput finished 49th with a score of 587 - while Junior World Champion Navnath Fartade managed a score of 583 - in the Minimum Qualifying Score - event.

In the women's category, ace shooter Anjali Bhagwat finished 12th with a score of 395 - while Tejaswini Sawant was 19th with a score of 394 -.

Suma Shirur finished 54th with a score of 389 - while Avneet Kaur Sidhu shot a score of 395 - in the MQS section.

Yi Zhang of China won the gold with a score of 503.3 and the silver went to German Sonja Pfeilschifter, who shot a total of 502.7. American Jamie Beyerle won the bronze with a total of 502.6.
