10 killed in Sri Lanka violence

[RxPG] Colombo, Jan 1 - The new year dawned with a fresh wave of violence in Sri Lanka, claiming the lives of 10 people in the northern and eastern parts of the island, a military official said Monday.
Suspected Tamil guerrillas set off a claymore mine, killing two policemen and injuring another in Chettikulam Vavuniya, 240 km north of the capital Monday evening, a military spokesman said.
The incident came hours after another claymore mine was set off against an army foot patrol, killing one soldier and injuring two others in Jaffna, 390 km north of the capital, he said.
In two separate incidents in the eastern province, troops recovered three bodies belonging to minority Tamils and four others from the majority Sinhala community Monday afternoon.
A military spokesman said the three bodies found in Kiran, Batticaloa, 240 km east of the capital, belonged to supporters of the Karuna faction, a splinter group of the Tamil rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam -.
They were suspected to have been killed by the guerrillas.

During the past year more than 3,000 people have been killed in clashes between Tamil guerrillas and troops in northern and eastern Sri Lanka.
