Bomb blast in Sri Lanka, 15 civilians killed
Apr 2, 2007 - 5:16:09 PM

Colombo, April 2 - About 15 civilians were killed and over 18 injured as suspected Tamil Tigers blew off a private bus Monday in Sri Lanka's east, defence officials said.

The explosion occurred at about 12:10 p.m. - near an Army roadblock in the island country's eastern Ampara district, said the military spokesman Prasa

Samarasinghe.

'The security forces suspect that the bomb would have been placed inside the bus by the

LTTE - to deliberately target civilians,' Samarasingh

said.

The private bus was carrying passengers from Ampara to the central provincial town of

Badulla when it exploded.

The incident came after the defence authorities blamed LTTE rebels for murdering at least six civilians in a construction site in the Eastern Province. The construction workers,

all from the majority Sinhala community were shot dead at Batticaloa district Sunday

night.

Government troops and the LTTE are currently locked in fierce battles in the north and the east. More than 4,000 people have been killed since December 2005.

The LTTE has been fighting for an independent homeland for Sri Lanka's Tamil minorities since the 1970s.
