Group Captain Ajantha Silva, the Air Force spokesman said MI24 helicopters were used to bomb a rebel position north of Omanthai, forward defence line in the northern district of Vavuniya at 12.30 a. m. -, targeting heavy weaponry of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam -.

An air strike was also carried out at Kirinchi area in the northeastern Mannar district at around 4:30 a.m. targeting a base of the rebels' sea wing, Silva said.

The Air Force has been conducting strikes at several rebel positions since last week when LTTE attacked the main Air Force base near the international airport using light fighter aircraft.

That was the first ever rebel air strike on a government position in the history of the over three-decade-old separatist armed conflict.
