Colombo, April 17 - The Sri Lanka Air Force carried out air raids against a Tamil Tigers training base north of the island Tuesday, said the military.

'We took identified LTTE - targets destroying a training camp,' said air force spokesman, Group Captain Ajantha Silva.

The bombing was carried out at Pudukudiiruppu area in the rebel controlled Mullaithivu district at around 9.45 a.m. local time, Silva said.

The extent of the damage inflicted on the rebels by the attack was not known, he added.

There was no response from the rebels on the latest air raid.

The air force has been bombing rebel positions in the north and east since the unsuccessful attempt by the LTTE to assassinate the army commander here at the end of April 2006.

More than 4,000 government soldiers, LTTE rebels and civilians have been killed since December 2005 with the escalation of conflict between the two sides.
