[RxPG] Colombo, March 27 - At least six people, including four civilians, were killed in a suicide attack by suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam - rebels in eastern Sri Lanka Tuesday morning.

Rebels with an explosives laden tractor attempted to enter the Chenkaladi military camp in the eastern Batticaloa district at about 7.15 a.m. local time, defence sources said.

The tractor was fired upon by the guards, seconds before the suicide cadre triggered the explosion, officials said.

Two soldiers and four civilians were killed in the explosion while two soldiers, two policemen, and five civilians also got injured in the attack.

The office of the Eelam People's Democratic Party located next to the military camp suffered severe damage in the blast, officials said.

The suicide attack in Batticaloa came after the LTTE's first-ever aerial attack in the over three decade separatist conflict.

Tiger rebels using a light aircraft had Monday carried out a predawn attack on Sri Lanka's major Air Force base near the capital Colombo, killing three airmen and injuring 16 others.

More than 4,000 people have been killed since December 2005 despite a Norwegian-arranged truce in place.

The LTTE has been fighting for an independent homeland for Sri Lanka's 12.5 percent Tamil minority since the 1970s.
