The bird flu scare is impelling Christians in Kerala, India to religiously observe the 50-day Lent, a period of frugality beginning Feb 27 leading up to Easter, by becoming pure vegetarians, according to several members of the community.

Christians account for 23 percent of the 32 million Kerala population and now even those members of the community who may not observe a 'lean' Lent period are adhering to the strict rules of frugal food.

Meanwhile, hotels in the state are keeping chicken out of their menu. Sales of chicken have dropped by 50 percent. The Kerala government has also closed the eight entry points on the border to stall poultry imports from Maharastra, but imports from Tamil Nadu still continue with stringent checks.
