Alerting people on bird flu through sand sculptures

Sand artist Sudarsan Patnaik Sunday created sculptures in a beach in Orissa to make tourists aware of the bird flu - a day after the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus surfaced in Maharashtra.
The images he created, along with 20 students of his Golden Sand Art Institute, showed several chickens sitting at the Puri beach with a slogan: "Be alert! Bird Flu".
"It took five hours for the effort," Patnaik said.
"Every day, thousands of tourists visit the beach and the sculptures would create awareness among them," Patnaik told IANS over phone from Puri, 56 km from here.
Patnaik has won several international awards for his sand sculptures.
The High Security Animal Disease Laboratory at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh Saturday reported India's first bird flu cases from Navapur village of Nandurbar district, some 300 km from Mumbai.
