[RxPG] Mysore, April 8 - President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Sunday won the hearts of budding Infoscians with a lively interaction at IT major Infosys Technologies' campus here by bonding with them instantly and igniting their minds with his talk on the future of converging technologies.

After a whirlwind tour of the IT bellwether's facilities in the sprawling 335-acre campus, first by an Indian president, Kalam said he was overwhelmed by the global education centre - and its unique training system involving research and education for the budding techies.

'It is a fantastic place. When I entered the campus and went around the GEC, I felt I have missed something. Though it is too late to discuss, let me admit that I should have joined here 55 years ago,' Kalam told about 2,800 trainees, who cherished his every word with a round of applause.

To inspire the young trainees and instil confidence in them, Kalam recalled how he learnt to solve complex problems and find solutions from his guru Satish Dhawan, who was chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation - in the 1970s.

'I was in 30s when my guru - assigned me the challenging task of building the country's first satellite and rocket system in seven years. His only advice was not to allow any problem to preside over. Instead, one should preside over the problem and succeed in solving it,' the president said.

Lauding the foresight and vision of Infosys founder chairman and chief mentor N. R. Narayana Murthy for building the global IT firm and creating such a campus for its future growth, Kalam said the GEC would empower Infoscians to learn lifelong and remain a centre of excellence.

Referring to the convergence of technologies leading to ICT - and biotechnology to bio-informatics, he said the advent of nano-technology would result in material convergence, with a host of applications such as nano-robots to fight diseases and create more intelligent habitat for longevity.

'Nano-technology is the field for the future that will replace micro electronics and many fields with tremendous potential in the areas of medicine, electronics and material science. When ICT meets intelligent silicon electronics, photonics are born leading to material convergence.

'When material science and biotechnology converge, a new science called intelligent bioscience will lead to a disease-free, happy and more intelligent habitat with scope for longevity and great human capability.

'Finally, convergence of all these technologies can lead to the development of nano-robots, a DNA-based programme which can locate a disease in the affected part of the body to diagnose and treat,' Kalam pointed out.

The president also made the young Infoscians, including about 100 trainees from Malaysia, take a seven-point oath with him in one voice to set an ambitious goal, to practise righteousness, to lead an honest life, fight corruption and make India a developed country by 2020.
