[RxPG] Bangalore, April 13 - Infosys Technologies Ltd has elevated its current CEO and managing director Nandan M. Nilekani as the company's co-chairman with effect from June 2.

In a notification to the stock exchanges here Friday, the company said its board of directors has appointed chief operating officer -, president and joint managing director S. Gopalakrishnan - as the new CEO and managing director.

Infosys chief mentor N.R. Narayana Murthy will, however, continue to be the IT bellwether's non-executive chairman.

'The board has felt having both an executive chairman and a CEO would best serve the global organisation, with Nilekani as co-chairman and Kris Gopalakrishnan as the CEO and managing director,' the notification said.

The company's founder director S.D. Shibulal has been made the new COO.

Commenting on the top management changes in a statement here, Murthy said Nilekani had voluntarily decided, at a young age, to pass on the baton to a worthy successor - Kris Gopalakrishnan, as chosen by the board.

'Kris is gentle but firm, consultative yet decisive and thoughtful yet action-oriented. Shibulal is smart, focused, detailed and target-oriented. I am sure Nandan, Kris and Shibu will together perform extremely well with the high performance team they have,' Murthy said.

The company's nomination committee chairman Claude Smadja, an independent director on the board, said Kris and Shibulal were the best candidates to take the relay from Nandan in terms of leadership capabilities, vision and gravitas.

'In my new role, I will focus on key client relationships, be a brand ambassador, deal with broad industry issues, provide global thought leadership, lead some transformation initiatives and contribute to strategy,' Nilekani said on his new posting.

Gopalakrishnan plans to focus on making the company more competitive, increase productivity, be a leader in corporate governance, attract the best of global talent and enhance brand equity.

As COO, Shibulal will focus on increasing competitiveness, improve customer experience, enhance employee engagement and boost the depth of services.
