Healthcare new frontier of Indo-US ties: CII
Jan 20, 2006, 15:07, Reviewed by: Dr. Priya Saxena

"Healthcare in the US is an extremely sensitive area and is plagued by exorbitant costs. India can help the US in supplying low cost high quality healthcare and help save more than US $ 300 billion in health costs over the next 10 years"

Healthcare would be the next big area of initiative that would lend fillip to Indo-US relations, according to a top official of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

"We are entering a new phase of Indo-US cooperation in the sphere of healthcare", Tarun Das, chief mentor, CII said, while addressing the plenary session on "India and the US: Forging a new partnership" organised during the 12th CII partnership summit at Kolkata Thursday.

"Healthcare in the US is an extremely sensitive area and is plagued by exorbitant costs. India can help the US in supplying low cost high quality healthcare and help save more than US $ 300 billion in health costs over the next 10 years," he said.

Das said that India was helping the US drive its innovation cycle to retain its competitive position in the world, especially in the wake of receding global competitiveness of the American economy.

Indian engineering capabilities had been helping the US retain global competitiveness in the world in the area of IT and ITES sectors, especially since the 1990s.

Das said Indian IT companies' engagement with US IT companies was a turning point in the US-India economic relations. We see sustained partnerships in IT and ITES Sectors between US and India, he added.

Speaking on energy cooperation, Das said the endeavour would not be in the area of power projects alone, but also aid nuclear power development and development of renewables in India with US help. Energy will be a big area of partnership for India and the US, he said.
