Paris Hilton sentence cut in half for 'good behaviour'
May 18, 2007 - 8:31:45 AM
Hilton's troubles began in September 2006 when the star of the reality TV show, 'A Simple Life', was arrested for driving under influence. In January this year, she pleaded no contest -- the equivalent of a guilty plea -- and was sentenced to three years' probation and had her license suspended. But in February she was pulled over for driving without headlights and was found to be driving on a suspended license. Earlier this month, a shocked and tearful Hilton was sentenced to 45 days in jail for violating her probation.

[RxPG] Los Angeles, May 18 - Celebrity heiress Paris Hilton will only have to serve 23 days in jail instead of the earlier sentence of 45 days for violating her probation for a drink-driving conviction.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has decided to cut in half the 26-year-old's sentence after reviewing the case and giving her credit for good behaviour.

Prison overcrowding may further reduce her sentence. A spokesperson for the Sheriff's department was quoted as saying earlier that the exact time she serves will only be determined once Hilton checked into the women-only Century Regional Detention Centre in California on June 5.

The paparazzi's favourtie will also be kept in a special needs housing unit. This will keep her off limits to other jail inmates because they may take pictures of her behind bars on their cellphones and sell them.

On her part, Hilton has dropped her appeal against the sentence.

There have been two online petitions signed by thousands, one for her pardon and the other one supporting the 45-day sentence.
