[RxPG] New York, March 23 - The UN Security Council expressed dismay and condemned the mortar attack in Baghdad near where UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki were holding a press conference.
Council President Dumisani Kumalo said the council 'strongly condemned the abhorrent terrorist attack on the Iraqi prime minister's office where the secretary general participated in a joint press conference.'
The council discussed the incident Thursday, in which neither Ban nor al-Maliki was hurt, it supported UN efforts to promote an effective political process in Iraq aimed at reaching national reconciliation, preserving its sovereignty and territorial integrity, he said.

Ban's one-day stop in Baghdad was the start of a 10-day tour of Middle East nations, which will include Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Palestinian occupied territories. It was the first visit by a UN leader since Kofi Annan visited Baghdad in Nov 2005.
