[RxPG] Kolkata, May 8 - Fresh tension erupted Tuesday at the site of the Tata Motors' proposed small car unit in Singur in West Bengal's Hoogly district when over 200 farmers tried to raze the boundary wall of the enclosed area.

'The incident happened suddenly at around 11 a.m. during a spell of heavy rain. A group of farmers from Singur tried to damage the boundary wall of the Tata Motors' factory site. But the moment they started approaching the wall, the police reached the spot and used teargas to disperse them,' Asit Pal, Hooghly's additional police superintendent told IANS.

He said the police resorted to mild force to disperse the crowd.

'The agitators couldn't cause any damage to the wall. No one has been injured and no arrests have been made in connection with the case,' said Pal.

Becharam Manna, convener of Singur Krishi Jami Raksha Committee - confirmed the attack.

'More than 200 farmers who had lost their lands in the process of land acquisition for the Tata's small car factory assembled at Bajemelia in Singur Tuesday morning. They were staging a demonstration there when some of the farmers tried to destroy the boundary wall,' Manna told IANS.

Singur, about 40 km from here in Hooghly district, has been chosen by Tata Motors for its small car project over 997 acres of land.

The issue had triggered a violent face-off between the government and the farmers led by civil society groups and parties like the Trinamool Congress over land acquisition.
