Kerala to tap wind energy

Of the total installed capacity of 2,617 MW, hydroelectric power constitutes 1,811 MW. Among the 30 power generating stations in Kerala, 24 are hydro-based, five are run on thermal power and one functions on wind power.

[RxPG] Thiruvananthapuram, May 9 - Kerala, which relies heavily on hydroelectric power, will soon tap wind energy as another source of electricity.
Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told reporters Wednesday that the state owned Agency for Non-Conventional Energy and Rural Technology had been appointed the nodal agency for the task to make wind energy a reality.
'There have been demands for this from the private sector for long so we have decided to clear it,' Achuthanandan said after a cabinet meeting.
Suzlon, for instance, has submitted a proposal to produce 20 MW of wind energy at Palakkad where the company has purchased 400 acres of land.
According to experts, Kerala has the potential to generate 600 MW of electricity through windmills.

The windmill that now generates 2 MW is owned by the Kerala State Electricity Board. It was commissioned in 1995.
